The deadly Camp Fire wildfire has wreaked havoc on Paradise, California, killing dozens of people and displacing thousands more.
Just before the wildfire hit, Heather Roebuck delivered the last baby at Feather River Hospital in Paradise before the facility was forced to close down due to the fire. Minutes after Heather delivered her baby Halley into the world via cesarean section, everyone in the hospital was told to evacuate. The scene in the maternity ward was chaotic, with nurses running around telling mothers to grab their babies and go.
Heather found herself separated from her baby and her husband, as she had to be taken out in an ambulance. Just one mile down the road, however, the ambulance started melting from the flames. Heather was still numb from the waist down from her cesarean section, so she couldn’t move on her own. Assuming that she was about to die, Heather made what she thought was her last phone call to her husband, telling him to make sure that her children knew that she loved them.
“I realized I’m not going to make it,” she said.
Just when Heather had lost all hope, a stranger appeared out of nowhere. The man dragged her out of the ambulance, and into a nearby house to safety!
“He dragged me out onto the street and it’s just pitch black,” Heather said.
Thanks to the bravery of this man, Heather survived and made it home to her husband and children! While the wildfires are horrific, it can’t be denied that disasters like this bring out a beautiful side of humanity that we often do not get to see.
