Twins are unique and special anyway, but when twins are joined together it makes them even more extraordinary. That’s exactly what happened with Abby and Isabelle Carlson. The two identical girls were born conjoined in 2006, but that isn’t even what makes them extra special. These girls were joined from their chests down past their stomachs.

Isabelle’s heart was partially inside of her sister and their other vital organs were tangled up together in a sort of puzzle. The miracle doesn’t stop there either.

The girls spent the first six months of their life in the hospital while doctors tried to determine if the girls could be separated and survive. Eventually, the girls made news. Not just because they were conjoined, but because doctors were able to successfully separate them.

 

It took months of practicing and training by the doctors at the Mayo Clinic. The surgery lasted over 12 hours and required 17 surgeons, but when it was over, instead of having conjoined little girls, Abby and Isabelle’s parents had two healthy little girls.

Now the girls are over ten years old and they couldn’t be more different if they tried. They are competitive, spunky, and exceptional in academics. The girls can’t understand how anyone can mistake them for the same person.

Their parents say they are a blessing and they can’t believe how incredibly lucky they are to have such beautiful little girls that are now completely healthy.

The girls still have to have regular follow ups with their doctors to ensure they are healthy and all is going well, but you’d never know by looking at them that anything was ever different about them.
