Jake Olsen had always dreamed of being a warden with the Department of Fish and Wildlife. So when the opportunity came a few months ago in California, he and his family packed up and moved to Paradise, California.
It wasn’t long after they moved that the Camp Fire began. So far, the tragic fire has claimed 31 lives and some 200 people are still missing. The Camp Fire alone has claimed 29 lives tying it for the most deadly fire on record that occurred in California in 1933.
The fire has caused chaos and devastation and numerous homes have been destroyed. The Olsen’s family home was one of them. Jake, his wife, and their four children lost their home completely. As if that wasn’t bad enough, six other homes in the family were also destroyed. Jake’s parents lost their home, his wife’s parents, her parent’s parents, Jake’s sister-in-law, and his wife’s uncle all lost their homes as well.
Right after the families evacuated their homes, Jake quickly went to work as a warden. He visited a nearby nursing home and helped evacuate the residents there. The next day, he was finally able to return to the scene where his home used to be. But when he returned, there was one specific thing his wife asked him to look for – her wedding ring.

She had left it on the counter in the bathroom while rushing to evacuate. Knowing the home had been completely destroyed, neither of them had much hope of finding. But what Jake saw when he returned to their home shocked him. The washer and dryer was still standing, and after digging through some rubble and ashes, the wedding ring appeared and it hadn’t been damaged.
Jake says among the tragedy, it was nothing short of a miracle to find his wife’s wedding ring. It is now safely tucked in his pocket until he can return it to her.
