Police officer Mike Kelly is used to seeing some of the worst parts about the world. Sometimes it’s hard to ignore the sadness that he sees, but one night while working a second job, he felt God tugging at his heart.

Kelly had picked up an extra shift working as a Walmart security guard. He was busy watching customers head in and out of the store just like he had multiple times before.

The evening seemed to be going fairly slow, as normal, when he says he heard God telling him to really pay attention to what was going on around him. Kelly says he started really watching people and noticing the little things.

That’s when he noticed a father and his four children at the checkout. He had seen the family before, but something caught his attention this time. The father was having trouble paying for his groceries.

Kelly says he had always been impressed with the family and how well the kids behaved. This time was no different, but the cart full of groceries was about to be left behind.

Kelly didn’t know if the machine wasn’t reading the man’s card right, or there wasn’t enough money on the card,  but he knew he had to do something to help.

He quickly stepped up and asked the father if he could take care of his groceries for him, and even added in a bit of candy for the kids when the father gratefully accepted.

Kelly’s kind deed was captured by another shopped and shared to social media. With a bit of help from the police department where Kelly has worked for 18 years, his identity was finally determined.

People flocked to social media to thank Officer Kelly for his kindness, but Kelly remains humble about what he did. He says he just hopes that his actions spur a chain reaction where we all look for someone to help.
