Twins are remarkable, and if you know some twins, or especially if you’ve ever seen a pair of twins born, you know just how amazing they can be. Twin births are even on the rise according to statistics. In the 1980’s some 1 in 53 babies in the U.S. were twins, but by 2009 that number had changed to 1 in 30; a whopping 76 percent increase. Another interesting fact is that 62 percent of twins have mothers over the age of 30.

Doctors think that these statistics could be due to the increase in fertility treatments such as IVF and other modern medicine creations. Dr. Rodgrigo da Rosa Filho from Brazil is a fertility specialist that knows about these treatments first hand.

He founded a reproduction clinic called Mater Prime in Sao Paulo and has seen his fair share of twin births. He knows how strong their bond can be, and he knows all about their private language. Twins often develop a language all their own that only they understand. This is known as idioglossia or cryptophasia. Twins are known for using this language to communicate and to comfort each other.

Their bond starts at an early age, and as you’ll see in Dr. Rodgrigo’s video below, it is very strong. These newborn twins cry right after birth, but just the contact of their skin is able to calm them.
