What should have been a joyous time for one Maryland mother, turned into a somewhat of a nightmare. The new mother had just given birth when she found out she tested positive for opiates.
Elizabeth Eden says she remembers when the doctor came in and told her the news. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She had never used drugs in her life and knew there must be a mistake.
Social workers were called in to assist with the situation and her baby, Beatrice, was monitored every four hours for symptoms of withdrawal. The positive drug test was even reported to the state.
Finally, after five days of being monitored in the hospital, the family was able to go home with their newborn, but the nightmare still wasn’t over. Social workers from the state continued to visit the family.
After three weeks, Elizabeth and her new baby were found to be in the clear. So what caused the problem? An everything bagel that Elizabeth regularly bought from a local bakery.

The bagel was covered in a variety of seeds, including poppy seeds. Studies show that just one teaspoon of poppy seeds can result in a false positive for opiates.
Elizabeth says after posting her incident on social media, she discovered that her situation isn’t all that uncommon. Her advice to expecting mothers – don’t eat anything with poppy seeds if you’re getting anywhere near delivering your newborn.
