When a holiday falls on a weekday, it can be a real bummer for those who have to head back to work the next morning. It just happens that Halloween is often one of those holidays.

Parents hurry home after work to get their children all dressed up and head out to celebrate the holiday. They walk around in the dark and hope to get to bed in time to keep from breaking their typical school night routine. It certainly isn’t an easy task.

But the Halloween & Costume Association is attempting to change the holiday by moving the date of Halloween. Instead of celebrating it on October 31st of every year, they want to move it to the last Saturday in October so the holiday will always be held on a Saturday.

“We feel the change is inevitable and that in the end, the logic behind creating a safer, longer Halloween will prevail,” HCA Chairman Kevin Johnson said in a statement.

They argue that it will be safer for the kids because they can get home before dark and the holiday won’t be so rushed by giving families more time to celebrate rather than just a few hours between school and work.

A petition has even been started to help push for the change in date. The petition currently has some 8,500 signatures, but the association hopes to have at least 10,000 before presenting the petition to an elected official.

But not everyone agrees with the change. Some say the change would go against long-standing traditions which have always celebrated Halloween on the eve preceding the church’s celebration of All Saints Day on November 1.

Halloween can be traced back to some 2,000 years ago, and naysayers of the movement claim the association only wants the date of Halloween changed for monetary reasons.

They say changing the date would allow more people to trick or treat resulting in more costumes sold, more candy purchased, and more money in retailers pockets.

What do you think? Should Halloween be changed, or should we stick with tradition? Be sure to share this story with your family and friends and see what they have to say.
