A woman from Minnesota just gave her new baby the best possible gift when she saved the life of her husband just in time for him to meet their child.

Ashley Goette, 28, was 39 weeks pregnant when she woke up on October 16 to discover that her husband Andrew, 28, was gasping for air. Staying calm, Ashley called 911 and she was coached on how to perform CPR on him before paramedics arrived to rush him to the nearest hospital.

Dr. Alex Teeters, a pulmonary and critical care physician at United Hospital, explained that doctors were “preparing for the worst” when Andrew arrived since he had been deprived from oxygen for some time. They cooled his body and kept him in a coma, which was terrifying for Ashley.

“I didn’t want to have to think for one second about having to do any of this without him,” she said. “I kept telling him the whole time he was asleep, or in his coma, that I was not going to have this baby until he woke up.”

Thankfully, Andrew woke up on October 17, and he did not have any brain damage.

“I looked at him at one point and said ‘Andrew, open your eyes’ and he did,” recounted nurse Libby Remmers. “And it was really just the best moment.”

“Libby [the nurse] grabbed him and said ‘Andrew, do you know you’re having a baby?’ And he went mhm. And she was like do you want to be there to be a part of your baby’s life? And he shook his head yes,” Ashley said.

Ashley was induced the very next day, and she welcomed their son Lennon Andrew Goette into the world on October 19. Andrew was brought down from the ICU to meet their baby that very same day.

“They brought Andrew down to labor and delivery, on his very own hospital bed and just parked it right next to mine. And he got to be there throughout all of labor and delivery,” Ashley said.

Andrew watched Ashley give birth via FaceTime!

“I’m still watching on my phone as they’re coming through the door. So that was pretty cool,” he explained. “And I was already standing there with my shirt off waiting for him, with all my electrodes still hanging off of me.”

“I think we’re both a little nervous to go home because it’s going to be so much different than when we left, but no we’re very anxious to get home,” Ashley said. “And to be able to cuddle, these beds aren’t very big. He’s coming home. And that’s really the only thing that matters.”

Doctors think that Andrew has Wolff-Parkinson White syndrome, which gives him a rapid heartbeat. Doctors will able to fix his issue quickly, but they believe that Ashley is the real hero.

“I don’t think Andrew would be here today if it wasn’t for the actions of Ashley,” concluded Teeters.
