David Burke is a firefighter from the United Kingdom who is the father of a son named Jay, who has Down syndrome. Because of this, David often has difficulty running errands with his son, as his disability presents challenges that many other parents do not face.
One of Jay’s favorite places to go is the Tesco grocery store, and his father took him there recently. Jay loves to watch the cash register and conveyor belt at the store, and doing so always makes him smile. During this trip to the store, David was doing everything he could to keep Jay away from a closed cash register since his son wanted to scan items there as if he was an employee.
Just as David was about to lose his patience, the store’s manager stepped up and did something amazing. David expected the manager to be angry, but he wasn’t upset at all! Instead, he allowed Jay to open the close lane and scan his father’s groceries for him!
David was overjoyed to see how happy this made his son.
“He felt like a worker and it just warmed my heart to see how focused he was and how much he was enjoying himself,” David said afterwards. “It was amazing to see [the staff] take the time and patience to do this for Jay.”
This just goes to show how powerful one small act of kindness can be! If you just take the time to do something nice for someone, you really could make their day!
