Kaylieann Steinbach is a 3 year-old girl who was very excited when it came time for picture day at her school in Rocklin, California. That morning, her father Austin picked out three outfits for Kaylieann to choose from.

However, Kaylieann refused to wear any of the outfits that he had chosen and instead went with one of her own, and the outfit that Kaylieann chose was an unusual one to say the least.

Austin was neither offended nor surprised when Kaylieann refused to wear any of the outfits that he had chosen, as he and his wife Jami had raised her to think independently. In fact, Kaylieann is known for going to school in unusual outfits that she chose herself.

“I had a normal school day outfit picked out for her,” said Austin. “But when she saw it, she said, ‘No, Supergirl!’ I said I’d take the heat if mom gets mad.”

When Austin got Kaylieann’s school photo, he thought it was so funny that he posted it to the social media site Reddit, where it quickly went viral. Austin and Jami could not believe that the photo got so much attention!

Austin explained that Kaylieann is 75 percent deaf in both of her ears. The deaf community has applauded Kaylieann for the amount of confidence that she has on display in her school photo!

“She wasn’t born deaf,” Austin said. “It wasn’t until she was 2½ years old that we found out she was deaf. Doctors haven’t been able to tell us why. It’s been an eye-opening experience. She has a speech therapist and an audiologist and we work with her on sign language. But she attends a regular auditory school.”

Austin added that Kaylieann is passionate about all superheroes.

“She’s starting to get into dolls and Barbies, but she still loves superheroes,” he said. “Since she can’t really hear the TV, she spends all her time dressing up in costumes and playing superheroes. I love it.”
