A miracle just happened at the Chester Zoo in the United Kingdom, and it’s touching the hearts of people all over the world.
A rare silvery gibbon was just born to mother Tilu and father Alven after a gestation period of about 210 days. The silvery gibbon is considered to be one of the most endangered species in the world, with officials saying that there are less than 2,500 left in the wild.
“Habitat destruction on densely populated Java [Indonesia] continues to reduce the natural range of the species,” Wikipedia states. “Many gibbons are also lost to the illegal pet trade, when adults are hunted so their young can be sold in the markets as pets.”
The good news is that this newborn silvery gibbon was born as part of an “unprecedented baby boom” at the Chester Zoo. In fact, this ended up being the most mammal births on record!
The newborn silvery gibbon was so tiny that zookeepers have not been able to ascertain it’s gender yet. The heartwarming video below came just one day after the baby was born, and it shows Tilu lovingly cradling her pink newborn inside her enclosure.
“This new baby gibbon has arrived hot on the heels of a whole host of other important births,” said Mike Jordan, the zoo’s Collections Director. “Indeed over the last few months we’ve witnessed a huge baby boom at the zoo – including the most mammal births on record.”
“Silvery gibbons, as with the vast majority of the species born recently, face threats to their survival in the wild,” he continued. “Importantly, each new arrival is helping us to raise awareness of the issues they face and the conservation work the zoo is doing to try and protect them, as well as being a valuable part of their respective conservation breeding programmes.”
