Last summer, a Good Samaritan spotted a stray cat wandering the streets of Kingston, Ontario. This kind person was able to get ahold of the stray and bring her to a farm sanctuary run by Carla Reilly Moore and her husband.

The cat had eyes that were swollen and infected, and she also walked with a limp. Luckily, she was able to get some much needed TLC at the Happy Tails Farm Sanctuary!

Though this facility is typically used for rescued farm animals, Carla noticed something special about the cat right away.

“We took her in, no questions asked,” Carla recalled. “I found myself saying yes before I even knew what I was saying!”

The gorgeous Siamese cat, who they named Sapphire, spent her first day at the sanctuary hiding. However, her curiosity quickly got the best of her and she soon ventured out to explore, eventually even curling up with both Carla and her husband. They soon noticed that Sapphire had a particularly strong bond with their newborn baby Mary, who was only one month old at the time!

As Sapphire watched Carla care for her newborn, her own motherly instincts quickly kicked in.

Sapphire was wary of the family’s dog, so she would run over to stand guard over Mary whenever the canine was around.

“She just couldn’t seem to get close enough to her,” Carla said. “Then she started to wrap her arms around the baby. She’d snuggle her face right into Mary’s neck.”

Eventually, Carla would often find Sapphire and Mary taking naps with each other. Sapphire would typically sleep with her arm slung protectively over Mary. Carla said that this is a love story that “transcends time, transcends species and may even defy logic.”

Mary is lucky to have a cat like Sapphire to watch over her!
