When Debbie Phillips recently took her 10 year-old son Leon shopping at their local Asda store in the Liverpool suburb of Hunt’s Cross, she certainly wasn’t expecting him to do this!

As soon as they got in the store, Leon saw a special toy panda that he immediately wanted. The toy was called “Lovable Huggable Panda,” and Leon asked his mother to buy it for him. Debbie sadly explained to Leon that their family was experiencing a rough financial patch, and she would not be able to afford the £15 toy until her next payday.

Leon was devastated to hear this, and not wanting to risk another child buying the toy he had already named “Pandy,” he hatched a plan to keep it. First, he placed Pandy in an empty cardboard box, which he put back on the shelf. Then, Leon grabbed a pen and began writing on the outside of the box.

His note was sad and heartwarming at the same time!

“My mum doesnt have anuff money, so she’s byeng  me Pandy next week 15 June. So please don’t bye him it will make me cry – thank you so much from his hopeful future owner. Pandas name is Pandy,” Leon wrote, trying to spell all the words as best he could.

Staffers later found the box and read the note, and they were immediately touched by Doug’s words. The store employees each pitched in some money to buy Pandy for Leon, and they then posted photos of the box on social media to try and locate the boy who wrote it.

It wasn’t until a few days later that Debbie came across the photos on Facebook.

“A few days later I was flicking through Facebook – I hadn’t realized until then what Leon had written – he’d really poured his heart and soul into his message,” she recounted.

Debbie immediately took Leon back to the store, where workers presented him with his beloved Pandy! Debbie said that the boy was incredibly touched at what the store employees had done for him.

“As he was walking out he said to me ‘This is the best day of my life’.  It meant the world to him – thank you so much Asda!” she said.

The store employees had no idea how much this meant to Leon’s family, as they were still getting over the tragic loss of his younger brother Oliver.

“In January my son Oliver was born prematurely and passed away four days later so it’s been a really tough, difficult time for all of the family, especially the children who were so involved in the lead-up to the birth,” Debbie explained.
