Davis Cripe and Lanna Hamann never knew each other. Davis was from South Carolina and Lanna from Arizona. But the two teens have one thing in common. They both died from sudden heart problems at the age of 16 due to what doctors believe was caused by the same thing.
The doctors for both teens believe they died due to getting too much caffeine from energy drinks. Lanna was a healthy, active teen, so it was a shock when she died of a heart attack.
She was at a beach in Mexico when she started having trouble breathing and collapsed. She was rushed to the hospital, but couldn’t be saved. That’s when her mother remembered that Lanna had been drinking energy drinks all day long. She’d finished a Red Bull right before she collapsed.

Doctors believe that energy drinks caused Lanna’s unexpected heart attack. Medical experts say there is evidence showing that these things cause harm by causing changes in heart rhythm and increasing blood pressure.
The high caffeine content in them is what makes them dangerous. The FDA says that the caffeine in one energy drink is about the same amount as five cups of coffee.
Many experts believe that these drinks should be regulated like alcohol and kept out of the hands of teenagers. Sean Cripe, Davis’ father, would likely agree.

His son died of sudden heart problems that are suspected to be a result of drinking too much caffeine. Davis, unlike Lanna, wasn’t drinking energy drinks alone. He had consumed an energy drink along with other highly caffeinated beverages.
Just like Lanna, Davis was a healthy 16-year-old with no previous heart issues. Yet he collapsed and died. Two hours before his death he had consumed a large diet Mountain Dew, a cafe latte from McDonald’s, and some type of energy drinks. He died of a heart arrhythmia.

An increasing number of studies are showing that the acidity and high caffeine content of energy drinks can cause a rapid heartbeat, dehydration, vomiting, high blood pressure, heart arrhythmias, headaches, seizures, insomnia, and even death.
