When Kerry McKinnon recently walked out on her porch in Victoria, Australia, she could not help but “burst out laughing” when she saw what her golden retriever was doing.
She couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw a baby koala sitting on top of her beloved dog, Asha!
“Poor Asha didn’t know what to think, she just kept looking at me with such a confused look,” Kerry said.
Asha had been sleeping on the porch when the koala approached her. It’s likely that the koala was looking for someplace warm to hang out, and she thought Asha’s fur was the perfect place to do so!
“I think the baby koala fell out of his mum’s pouch and didn’t know what to do,” Kerry said. “Asha definitely saved the koala’s life by keeping him warm. Temperatures at night in the area can go below 5C. It would have died out there if left alone all night.”
Kerry tried to separate the two, but the koala threw a huge fit. She had no intention of leaving Asha!
“I think dogs have that protective instinct. The koala didn’t want to leave Asha’s back. When we took the koala off to wrap it in a blanket, it hissed at me and carried on,” she said.
Kerry eventually brought the koala to her local veterinarian, and the animal is currently being cared for by a local rehabilitation worker. Once the koala is declared healthy enough, she will be released back into the wild again!
