“I Am Second” is a multimedia group that aims to inspire people to put Jesus Christ first in their lives. When the group first sat down with Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson, she was a 20 year-old girl trying to figure out what she wanted to do with the rest of her life.

“As a sixteen year old at the Olympic Games, I found my validation – I found my purpose – through achievement in gymnastics, and I felt like my ultimate purpose was going to be fulfilled if I won a gold medal,” she said. “Fast forward to the Olympics, I was standing on the gold medal stand, I had the gold medal around my neck and I felt purpose-less…I turned to God at that moment and found value and validation through Jesus.”

Since that video, Shawn’s life has changed dramatically! She married NFL long snapper, Andrew East, who was also trying to figure out where he wanted to go in life.

“I had the opportunity to play NFL football…and right off the bat, every day I thought was a day that I was going to get cut…It’s taken me two years to fully realize that my worth is not in football,” he explained.

In her latest “I Am Second” video, Shawn talks about how she had always feared that she would never be able to have children because of her years of intense athletic training. That’s why she was overjoyed when she learned that she was pregnant.

“When I found out I was pregnant it was the greatest moment in the world because it was basically God’s miracle of, yes, you’ve hurt your body for so many years, but this can still happen,” Shawn recounted.

Sadly, Shawn miscarried the very next day. In the video below, you’ll see Shawn and Andrew talk about this devastating experience, and the amazing thing that happened when they decided to share their story.
