Dogs have the same mental abilities as a child around 2 years of age according to the American Psychological Association. Researchers claim they can count, understand a large number of words, and are good at deceiving other dogs and people to get the things they want.

We know that they are also great at learning new tricks and can be excellent performers. That is why dogs make excellent additions to police and military departments and not just human companions.

Border collies, golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers, and of course German shepherds are some of the smartest dog breeds out there. German shepherds are often seen in military and police forces.
