Benny is a 5 year-old golden Labrador retriever who is taking the world by storm as the first ice skating dog!

Cheryl Del Sangro, a figure skater coach, has been teaching Benny to skate ever since she rescued him as a puppy just before he was set to be euthanized at an animal shelter. Since she rescued him, Cheryl has been taking Benny training at the Las Vegas Ice Center once every two weeks, and he has been learning a wide array of tricks there including turns, crossovers and bunny hops.

Viral footage shows Benny making his way around the rink in tailor-made skates with his own hockey stick and personal puck which he pucks up with his teeth.

Cheryl, 56, noticed that Benny loved being on the ice from the moment he set his paws on the rink. She felt inspired to train him as she watched him scooting around the ice gleefully picking up pucks. From the moment she rescued him, Cheryl noticed that he was “uncommonly smart and agile.”

“That’s when it clicked for me that I could teach him how to skate on actual ice skates,” Cheryl said. “If I could teach our daughter to skate back in Cleveland at the age of 17 months old, I could teach Benny to skate.”

With the help of a local shoemaker, Cheryl hooked Benny up with some custom made skates. He only wears the skates on his front paws, using his back ones for traction.

“He was very comfortable and immediately started to skate. I corrected his feet positions a few times and he was off on his own,” Cheryl said. “We were completely astounded.”

Benny has gotten so good that he is being brought on by the Las Vegas Golden Knights’ professional ice hockey team’s on-ice entertainment lineup.

“I do not want any money from this,” Cheryl said. ‘I just want everyone to see what I’ve seen, that this is just so amazing. I’ve never seen it before.”
