A video is going viral showing villagers in eastern Thailand come together to save a baby elephant that had become trapped inside a well on a rubber plantation.

It looked as if the baby was not going to make it, as the little elephant was seen struggling to keep its head above water. The baby’s mother was so frantic outside the well that she caught herself on a nearby protective electric fence and crashed to the ground, stunned. The mother recovered from the shock and began screaming to try and get someone to come help and save her baby.

Villagers heard her cries and called in a mechanical digger to excavate the well. Finally, rescuers were able to save the baby just before dawn, three hours after the little creature had fallen into the well. The baby elephant immediately rushed to rejoin it’s mother, and the two disappeared back into the forest.

A large herd of wild elephants are known to roam in that part of Chantaburi province. The creatures raid local farms, eating the crops and damaging plantations. That’s why many local farmers have erected electric fences to try to keep them off their land.

Elephants are known as some of the most intelligent creatures in the animal kingdom, and they feel many of the same emotions that humans do. We can only imagine how terrified this mother was when her baby fell, and we’re glad that this story had a happy ending!
