Fans have been praying for Olivia Newton-John ever since she announced that she was battling cancer for the third time.
Newton-John recently revealed that she had secretly fought breast cancer for a second time back in 2013. When asked why she kept that diagnosis a secret, she said, “I thought ‘It’s my life’ and I just decided to keep it to myself.”
The actress and singer had been in a minor car accident in early 2013, and a lump appeared in her right shoulder. At first, she thought it was due to the strain of her seat belt, before scans revealed it was the return of the breast cancer she had beaten two decades earlier.
Now, Newton-John is battling the disease again with a tumor found last year at the base of her spine. She explained that she has undergone radiation therapy, and is also using natural remedies to help cure her. Newton-John says that she has cut sugar out of her diet and is using marijuana to help ease her physical pain.
Newton-John’s husband John Easterling is founder of the Amazon Herb Company, and grows cannabis for her at their ranch in Santa Barbara, California.
“In California, it’s legal to grow a certain amount of plants for your own medicinal purposes… I’m very lucky that I live in a state where it’s legal and that I have a husband that is a plant-medicine man,” she said.
Despite everything that has happened to her, Newton-John still sees herself as a lucky woman.
“There are other people out there doing much, much worse than me. I’m a very privileged person, and I’m very aware of that,” she said. “I live in this beautiful place. I have a wonderful husband. I have all the animals that I adore. I have an incredible career. I have nothing, really, to complain about.”
When asked if she was worried about her cancer, Newton-John responded defiantly, “I believe I will win over it, and that’s my goal.”
