Guinness World Records has just announced that an 83 year-old Japanese woman is the oldest professional club DJ in the world.

Sumiko Iwamura, 83, aka DJ Sumirock, began going to DJ school at the age of 77, and she quickly realized she had a gift for it. Iwamura, who owns and works in the kitchen of a Chinese food restaurant, now regularly DJs at Decabar Z in Shinjuku. She’s so talented that she has gotten guest DJ gigs in places like Paris and New Zealand.

Iwamura explained to Guinness that she does not find DJing to be that different from running a restaurant.

“You get feedback from your customers quickly in both cases,” she said. “If you’re playing tracks and they don’t like it, they’ll leave the floor and start drinking at the bar. If the tracks are danceable, then they’ll stay on and dance their heart out. Restaurant customers are the same — if it tastes good, then they look happy, and they’ll tell me that they like it. For me, it’s easy to work out how people are feeling in both cases.”

Even when Iwamura is scheduled to DJ at night, she won’t take a day off from her restaurant. Instead, she will cook all night before heading to the club at 1am.

When asked where her energy comes from, Iwamura smiled and said, “I think I might be born with it! I don’t take any health supplements or do any exercises, but when I do something totally different, I feel energized.”
