Marjorie Carter is an 84 year-old former Olympic gymnast who has not let age stop her from being incredibly flexible.

Though she is a grandmother of five, Marjorie is still able to effectively perform numerous moves, including splits and cartwheels, and she says that staying limber is important to fighting old age.

“It’s so important when you get older to maintain that independence and mobility,” Marjorie said. “As they say, ‘Use it or you lose it.'”

Marjorie was on Great Britain’s Olympic women’s squad, and she took part in both the 1952 and 1960 games, which were held in Helsinki and Rome. She then acted as a coach for the sport for 25 years.

“Being selected to represent my country was exhilarating,” she said. “Those memories of the opening ceremony will last a lifetime. Everyone is always blown away when I tell them my story so that’s always nice to share.”

These days, Marjorie still goes to the gym three times a week to do rigorous workouts. She typically heads to the gym to begin her workouts at 6am.

“People in the gym always say, ‘You inspire me so much,’ which puts a huge smile on my face and keeps me motivated,” Marjorie said. “It definitely helps keep me young.”

Marjorie’s goal is to be able to still do handstands and splits when she is 100 years-old. She still competes, recently winning the top prize in a nationwide Inspirational Generation competition. The prize was a £2,000 cheque for winning, plus £200 to donate to a charity of her choice.

“I didn’t think I’d win, so I was absolutely overwhelmed to get that call. I had to take a minute to come to terms with it all,” Marjorie said. “It’s been a true honor, and I’ve had a really wonderful life.”
