Being a teenager isn’t easy. Social media makes it even harder. But thanks to the principal at West Side High School in Newark, New Jersey, the students won’t have to suffer from at least one kind of humiliation.

The principal, Akbar Cook, says he had noticed that around 85 percent of his students had missed school at one time or another because they didn’t have clean outfits to wear.

So he took things into his own hands and installed a laundromat at the school. The facilities are free for students to use. He says some of the students who use it are homeless and have no other way to wash their clothes. If they came with dirty clothes, they were teased.

These students no longer have to worry. Cook says the students are good kids who want to learn and now they can. He received a $20,000 grant through a foundation associated with one of the city’s utility companies, PSE&G.

The renovations are now complete and includes five washers and dryers along with a selection of detergents that have all been donated. Students can use the facilities from 3 to 6 p.m. and will be supervised as they learn to care for their clothes.
