Mykehia Curry of Macon, Georgia was about to be the first member of her family to go to college, but she needed a little bit of extra help to get there.

Mykehia had taken out student loans to pay for her tuition and housing at Albany State University, but she didn’t have enough money to pay for the other things that she would need as she prepared to live away from home for the first time. Mykehia’s mother is on disability, so money is tight in her family.

Just days before she was to leave for school earlier this month, Mykehia decided to ask God for help.

“I wrote a note that said, ‘God, please, help me get the rest of my stuff for college,’” Mykehia recalled. “Then, I said ‘Amen, I love you, God,’ and I wrote my name and number.”

Mykehia attached the note to three helium balloons leftover from her grandmother’s birthday celebration and watched it float into the sky.

“When I was writing the note, I was just trying to reach out to God. I didn’t know where it would land,” the teenager said. “I thought that someone would pick it up, and call me and tell me they got it or just throw it in the trash.”

The balloons flew around 15 miles northeast to Gray, Georgia, where Baptist minister Jerome Jones found the note. He was out on a job working for Georgia Power when he spotted the note.

“I saw something shiny and floating, so I walked over there, and I got it and it was balloons with a note tied to it,” he said. “They floated all night, and they landed right in my hands, I mean, practically.”

Jerome immediately called Mykehia and offered to buy her whatever she needed for school.

“He said they would love to help me out,” she said. “I was so shocked and surprised.”

Jerome teamed up with another member of his congregation to buy Mykehia a comforter and a refrigerator right before she moved into her dorm. She told reporters that she plans to keep in touch with Jerome as she goes about her freshman year.

Mykehia is planning to study nursing and hopes to get a job on campus so that she can pay her additional expenses.

“I am very excited to meet new people and start my journey and a new chapter in my life,” the young woman said. “This is a big step for me.”
