A few years ago, Ruth Reed and her husband made a New Year’s resolution that they now continue year-round. The New Jersey couple loves picking up a stranger’s tab at places like Wawa and Dunkin’ Donuts, just to show their community that there are still people out there performing good deeds!

The couple is especially interested in helping men and women who have served in the U.S. military, but they’re also willing to help out anyone who needs it.

Ruth, who is a retired elementary school teacher and is now a substitute teacher, was recently in line at her local Wawa when she noticed a man in front of her struggling to pay for his items at the register. The man couldn’t get his credit card to process, and all he needed was just $5. Ruth saw the opportunity to continue with her New Year’s resolution, so she stepped up to the register and paid for the man’s items.

It was only after she paid that Ruth got a closer look at the man and realized that he was country music star Keith Urban!

“I didn’t know it was Keith Urban. I didn’t think he had enough money to pay for his things so I said I would pay for it and briefly when he told me who he was and I didn’t believe it was him,” Ruth recalled. “He was very gracious and let me get my picture taken with him.”
