Academy Award winning actor Robert Redford just saddened his millions of fans when he announced that he will be retiring from acting after a 60 year career.

Redford, 81, said that his upcoming movie The Old Man & The Gun will be his last, and that he is glad to be ending his career on an “upbeat and positive” note.

“Never say never, but I pretty well concluded that this would be it for me in terms of acting, and (I’ll) move towards retirement after this because I’ve been doing it since I was 21,” Redford said. “I thought, ‘Well, that’s enough.’ And why not go out with something that’s very upbeat and positive?”

Redford’s lengthy career in Hollywood has included roles in such classic Hollywood movies as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance KidThe Sting, and Dog Day Afternoon. He also earned accolades behind the camera, as he won the Academy Award for Best Director for his 1980 film Ordinary People. Though he is retiring from acting, Redford indicate that he is still open to directing.

“We’ll see about that,” Redford said when asked if he will continue to direct.
