A dog was able to survive a wildfire in Greece last month by hiding in an outdoor oven.
The 4-year-old poodle mix was found in the oven outside a home that burned down in the fire, which raged in the seaside town of Mati on July 23. Animal rescue volunteer Artemis Kyriakopoulou recorded the moment she found the dog in a video that has since gone viral.
“I saw there was something like an [outdoor] oven, and I figured if anything were alive, it would be in there,” Artemis said. “It’s so sad because we haven’t been able to find an owner – unfortunately, the owner may have died in the fire. I am soon heading back to Mati to look for more animals that might have survived.”
She went on to say that “even its eyelashes are burnt, I wonder how this dog survived.”
The dog, who has been named Loukoumakis by his foster owner, is believed to have been a stray before the fire. Veterinarians who examined the dog also said that they found signs that he had been abused in the past.
The Dog’s Voice rescue group has been caring for Loukoumakis since he was found. Rescue workers with the group said that a woman is now in the process of adopting Loukoumakis, as she wants to give him the forever home that he deserves.
We’re so glad to see that Loukoumakis’ story had a happy ending. He really is one amazing little dog!
