When Anne Flores recently went to Harris County Animal Shelter in Houston, Texas, she was expecting to see some sad dogs. However, she never expected that she would see two women literally dragging their dogs into the shelter to forcibly abandon them.

Anne watched in horror as the dogs refused to move and basically begged their owners not to give them up. She was saddened to see that both women did not seem to care at all.

“He laid on his back and just rolled over. It was like he was saying, ‘Please don’t take me in here,'” Anne recalled.

The more she watched what was going on, the angrier Anne got.

“They were both pulling, but the dogs wouldn’t budge,” she said. “They had to pick them up because they just would not move. They would not walk in there. They didn’t care. They were just laughing and giggling because the dogs wouldn’t move. To them, it was just like throwing trash away. There was no remorse, nothing. I was really, really angry, and I could feel my blood pressure rise. Why get an animal if you’re not going to keep it and do this to them? It’s not fair.”

Anne snapped photos of what was going on and sent the images to Harris County Animal Volunteers, a group that helps find homes for the animals at the shelter. The black-and-white dog named Truman was scheduled to be put down in the next few days, so the group had to act fast to save him. The other dog, Mandi, was also scheduled to be euthanized the very next day. There wasn’t room at the shelter for these two dogs, so Cypress Lucky Mutt Rescue took them both in.

Thankfully, this group was able to find foster homes for both dogs! Kellie Donoghue, the director of Grace Mercy Love German Shepherd Rescue, went to pick up Truman for the group, and she was devastated when she saw him.

“First, I heard him howling,” she recounted. “We tried to get him to walk, but he just pancaked flat on the floor and wouldn’t move. He was so terrified, and he was peeing. But he was wagging his tail the whole time, which tells me that this dog just needs love, but doesn’t understand that humans can provide love.”

Once he was finally in the car, however, Truman started to feel safe.

“The whole time in the car, he just wanted to be near me,” Kellie said. “He was starting to warm up to me a bit in a 25-minute car ride, which you don’t often see. Sometimes it takes a really long time for dogs to open up to humans.”

Kellie tested Truman’s temperament when they got to her facility, and she was surprised by how he did!

“In just an hour, we saw a fantastic transformation of a dog who wouldn’t even walk and being flat on the ground and shaking, to feeling safe enough to sleep in the car and get close to me. He’s going to be just a fantastic dog to live with,” she said.

Truman remains at the rescue at this time, and he’s doing very well. Meanwhile, Mandi is being fostered by Jackie Duncan, but the dog sadly has lots of health problems. She is mange, and she tested positive for heartworms. On top of that, she has eye issues, and her eyes were nearly swollen totally shut when she was rescued. Luckily, Mandi’s foster family is giving her all the love and treatment that she needs!

We’re saddened by what happened to these two dogs, but we’re glad that they are getting the love that they deserve now! SHARE this story so your friends and family can see this as well!
