Maybelle is a cow who spent her life on a dairy farm providing milk. When it finally came time time for Maybelle to be retired, her owners were left with a very difficult decision to make about her future.

Though it would have made more sense economically to send Maybelle off to be slaughtered, her owners did not have the heart to do this. Instead, they decided to do the right thing and send Maybelle off to the forever home that she deserved!

Workers with The Gentle Barn came to pick Maybelle up and take her off to an animal sanctuary. Though she was now in a safe and peaceful place, it was clear to everyone that something was not right with her. Maybelle would not stop crying as she frantically paced around the barn. Though employees tried to calm her down, nothing could be done to pull her out of her anguish. Finally, the workers realized what was going on…

“In my experience, with all the cows we have taken into The Gentle Barn the only reason they ever cry like that is because they are looking for a baby,” explained founder Ellie Laks.

Workers were heartbroken to realize that Maybelle had been separated from her baby, and they knew they had to act fast!

The employees rushed back to Maybelle’s dairy farm, and her former owners were kind enough to let them have her calf! They then rushed the baby back to The Gentle Barn to reunite the calf with Maybelle.
