One of the most important tasks of a bus driver’s job is staying on schedule. However, the bus driver in this video didn’t let this stop him from helping an elderly blind man get around a street that was under construction.
Though 69 year-old Gene Hubbard was left blinded by diabetes, he has still been commuting to work unassisted for the last twenty years. Gene knows how to get to his job in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from the bus stop, but when the intersection was put under construction, he found himself in a tough situation.
“If I don’t have a regular locating point to start from, I may as well be in the middle of the ocean,” Gene said.
Bus driver Thaddaus Turner, 28, realized that Gene needed help, so he took action. Without hesitating, Thaddaus parked his bus, followed Gene, grabbed his arm, and helped him navigate the construction.
Thaddaus had no idea that fellow driver Sydney Kazmierczak was snapping a photo of his good deed.
“I feel like I was placed there at the right time to capture this moment!!” Sydney wrote as she shared the photo on social media. “I am so happy I quick pulled out my phone to snap the picture! Thad deserves to be recognized!!”
Thaddaus refuses to call himself a hero, however, saying all bus drivers would have done the same thing.
“The route was barricaded, it was rough for me as a driver, I can only imagine how rough it was for him,” Thaddaus said. “I was surprised when I saw it in the news. I didn’t think I would be here right now over something that is second nature to me, and my colleagues.”
