During the 1980s, the entire world was obsessed with the love story of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Charles was destined to one day be king of England, and his bond with Diana seemed like a love story out of a fairy tale.
Over 750 million people tuned in to watch Charles and Diana get married on July 29, 1981. The wedding was something out of a storybook, as Diana arrived in a horse-drawn carriage, wore a dress with a 25-foot long train, and got married in a cathedral.
One year after their marriage, Charles and Diana welcomed their son, Prince William. Less than two years after that, they welcomed their second son, Prince Harry.
Though Charles and Diana’s marriage seemed perfect to the public, it was actually far from that in reality. From the start of their marriage, Charles was having an affair with his long-time friend, Camilla Parker Bowles. The affair left Diana completely devastated.
In 1996, Charles demanded a divorce from Diana so that he could be with Camilla. At the time, Diana said in an interview, “Well, there were three of us in the marriage so it was a bit crowded…”
“The Princess of Wales has agreed to Prince Charles’s request for a divorce,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement. “The Princess will continue to be involved in all decisions relating to the children and will remain at Kensington Palace with offices in St James’s Palace. The Princess of Wales will retain the title and be known as Diana, Princess of Wales.”
After the divorce, Charles had Diana stripped of her title of “Her Royal Highness Princess of Wales.” This left Diana devastated, and she was horrified that Camilla would one day have her title.
After seeing how sad his mother was, Prince William made one promise to her. He promised that when he became king, he would reinstate her title.
Sadly, Diana passed away in 1997. Though William is still not king, many think that one of the first things he will do when he takes the throne is give his mother her title back.
