Being the parent of a special needs child can be difficult, as they are often being stared at and judged by others whenever they are out in public. Sadly, that’s what happened to this mother during a recent shopping trip, but luckily for her, an unlikely person was able to step in to brighten up her day!

It all started when Suzie Skougard brought her daughter Carly, who suffers from Down’s syndrome, with her to the grocery store one day. As they shopped, a total stranger approached Suzie and proceeded to berate her for not putting socks on Carly on such a cold day.

What the stranger did not know is that Carly had been wearing socks, she had just kicked them off. No matter how much Suzie tried, the socks just weren’t going to stay on, and the stranger would have known this had he taken a second to ask.

Things got even worse for Suzie as the shopping trip continued. First, a store employee ignored her when she asked where to find an item, then another customer blew passed her so fast that he nearly knocked her over! On top of all that, Carly was getting fussy since it was past her bedtime.

By the time she got to the checkout station, Suzie felt like the whole world was against her. That’s when an unlikely person stepped in and turned everything around!

An employee of the store who also suffers from Down’s syndrome stepped in to give Suzie a reminder that there are still good people in the world.

“Today as we were leaving the store, she said, ‘I have Down syndrome like her, and I have a big heart,'” Suzie recounted on Facebook.

Suzie was touched by the encounter and was reminded that Carly will grow up to be a good person, regardless of how nasty some people can be!

“Some people feel like those with Down syndrome don’t contribute anything meaningful to society, but amidst all of the Grinches today, [the special needs employee] stood apart. By just being her, she gave us an amazing gift. A smile,” Suzie concluded.

This serves as a reminder that sometimes a small smile can be enough to turn someone’s entire day around! SHARE this story so your friends and family can see this as well!
