As the summer heats up, so does vacation season. Millions of people around the U.S. are planning for summer vacation, or at least a quick weekend getaway to visit family and friends. There are plenty of things that you need to do before hitting the road, and here is a list of 10 things to do to make sure your home is safe and protected while you’re away.
1. Unplug Appliances and Electronics – The weather is unpredictable and you never know when a storm could strike. Protect your electronics from power surges by unplugging them before you leave. This will also reduce the odds of having an electrical fire and will save on electricity costs while you’re gone.
2. Set Up Cameras – Having indoor and outdoor security cameras will allow you to keep an eye on things while you’re away. Many home security systems offer wireless, night-vision cameras for indoor and outdoor, as well as weather-resistant cameras for outside. Some systems can steam live feed to your computer or mobile device.

3. Set a Timer for the Lights – A house that stays dark is a clear sign that you’re away. Make it look like you’re home by setting a timer, or have a system in place where you can remotely control your lights to turn on during the hours that you would normally be active inside your home.
4. Consider the Curtains – Don’t assume that having the drapes open or closed is the right move. Keep the curtains the way you normally do to avoid signaling that anything is different. Just remember that if you keep the curtains open, move any valuables out of sight.
5. Program Your Thermostat – Save money and energy by programming your thermostat during your trip. If you have the ability to control the thermostat remotely you can also make sure your home is at your preferred temperature when you return home.

6. Stay Quiet on Social Media – While it’s fun to share pictures and news of your travel on social media, it’s also a sure fire way to alert people that it is an ideal time to scope out your house. Save your pictures and status updates for when you return home.
7. Secure the Garage – Even if the garage doesn’t provide an entrance to your home, be sure to lock it up and secure any entryways so thieves can’t steal anything inside.

8. Install Exterior Lighting – Motion activated outdoor floodlights and exterior lights set on timers can effectively deter anyone who might be considering breaking into your home.
9. Double Check the Locks – As redundant as it sounds, make sure that all of your doors and windows are securely locked. Be sure to remove any spare keys from their normal hiding spots and instead leave them with friends, family, or a trusted neighbor.

10. Notify Your Alarm Company – Be sure that if you have an alarm company you notify them of the dates you will be away and direct them to call the police immediately if an alarm goes off.
Be sure to share these 10 tips with your family and friends so they can rest assured that their home is safe when they hit the road this summer.
