Tina Turner was left devastated this week when her eldest son Craig Turner died in an apparent suicide. He was 59 years-old.

Tina was just 18 years old when she had Craig with Kings of Rhythm saxophonist Raymond Hill. Craig was later adopted by Ike Turner after Tina married him in 1962. Craig’s childhood was a difficult one, as both him and Tina were abused by Ike before they finally divorced in 1978.

Tina has previously been open about the effects the abuse had on Craig, who she described as “a very emotional kid.”

“He’d always look down in sadness,” she said. “One day when Ike was fighting me, Craig knocked on the door and said, ‘Mother, are you all right?’ I thought, ‘Oh, please, don’t beat me at home.’ I didn’t want my children to hear.”

Craig worked as a real estate agent before taking his own life. He was found dead on Tuesday in his Studio City, California home with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

When her son died, Tina was in Paris, France for fashion week. Hours before Craig’s suicide, Tina was spotted at the Giorgio Armani Privé Haute Couture show. She has been living in Europe with her German music executive husband, Erwin Bach, since 1995, and she renounced her American citizenship in 2013.

This comes just months after Tina launched a self-titled musical based on her life that everything from her growing up in Nutbush, Tennessee to her marriage to Ike, and her career as a rock ‘n roll superstar.

Please keep Tina Turner’s family in your prayers during this difficult time!
