Rumors have been swirling over the past few months that Meghan Markle, the wife of Prince Harry, is hoping to run for president of the United States someday. A new poll, however, has dealt a major blow to these alleged political aspirations of hers.

The Express conducted a poll in both the U.S. and the United Kingdom that simply asked, “Should the Duchess of Sussex go into US politics?” A staggering 80% of Americans responded by saying that Meghan should not go into politics, while 75% of British citizens agreed that she should not make that career move.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said that this poll will come as very bad news to Meghan.

“These figures are not encouraging. However, if a campaign was started she would have top backing in the Democratic Party and this might change public opinion,” he said. “Meghan won’t be interested in the UK figure. She isn’t interested in popularity in the UK. The Sussexes are focused on the US and the wider world. There is so much rumour at the moment, I can’t see how she could be good for Anglo-American relations.”

However, television host Nigel Farage said that the poll will likely not stop Meghan from entering politics.

“This will disappoint the ambitious Meghan but is unlikely to stop her,” Farage said.

Ann Widdecombe, a former senior politician in the U.K., said that she was “slightly surprised” by the poll findings “because the Americans are taken in more by Meghan than we are.”

“I don’t think she should be a politician,” she continued. “I think she’s much too self-focused. Some celebrities make the transition. Ronald Reagan is one. He was a good president and he was a very good actor. It is possible. Being a well-known actor or a well-known anything else shouldn’t preclude you from making a transition but it doesn’t make it any easier.”

Widdecombe went on to say that people in the U.K. are sick of both Meghan and Harry.

“I think it is happening here. I haven’t seen any signs that it’s happening in the States but I don’t live there,” she said. “By and large I think the U.S. is still taken in by Meghan and Harry, and how they’ve had a terrible time and all the rest of it. I think over here, people are just getting fed up with the whingeing.”

“The couple haven’t been good at all for Anglo/American relations. But, on the other hand, I don’t think it’s done them any particular harm,” Widdecombe added.
