The Hollywood stars Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis shocked their fans this week by revealing that they do not bathe their children with soap every day.

The couple revealed this while appearing on the “Armchair Expert podcast.” During their interview, cohosts Dax Shepard and Monica Padman started discussing how frequent they shower. Shepard shocked Padman by saying that people “should not be getting rid of the natural oil on your skin with a bar of soap every day” and instead only wash with water, and Kutcher and Kunis agreed with him.

“I can’t believe I am in the minority here of washing my whole body in the shower. Who taught you to not wash?” Padman asked.

“I didn’t have hot water growing up as a child, so I didn’t shower much anyway,” Kunis replied. “But when I had children, I also didn’t wash them every day. I wasn’t that parent that bathed my newborns — ever.”

Shepard then revealed that he and his wife Kristin Bell previously bathed their daughters every day as “part of a nighttime routine,” but stopped when the kids got older.

“That’s how we feel about our children,” Kunis said, with Kutcher adding, “Now, here’s the thing: If you can see the dirt on them, clean them. Otherwise, there’s no point.”

As for their own bathing habits, Kutcher and Kunis revealed that they each don’t bathe with soap every day.

“I wash my armpits and my crotch daily, and nothing else ever,” Kutcher said of how he uses soap. “I got a bar of Lever 2000 that delivers every time. Nothing else.”

Though they don’t bathe every day, Kutcher and Kunis make sure to wash their faces at least once a day.

“I do have a tendency to throw some water on my face after a workout to get all the salts out,” Kutcher admitted, with Kunis adding, “I do wash my face twice a day.”

The Mayo Clinic states that using too much soap on babies “can dry out his or her skin.” The American Academy of Dermatology Association also said that children who are between the ages of 6 and 11 “may not need a daily bath,” but should at least wash once or twice a week.
