An ex-boyfriend of Meghan Markle’s who claims to have given the wife of Prince Harry her first kiss at the age of 13 is speaking out this week to say he thinks it’s “awesome” that she called out the royal family.

Joshua Silverstein, who is an actor, was impressed by Meghan and Harry’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired back in March.

“Meghan did Oprah and was very honest and transparent with her experiences in the royal family,” he said, according to Daily Mail. “There’s a history of racism within the royal family that goes way back to the transatlantic slave trade. The fact Meghan is able to get on TV and bravely talk about that is awesome.”

“Whenever people of color speak out against oppression and racism, genuinely there’s a huge backlash so the fact she got up and spoke about that even knowing it could create a lot of tension between her and her family, I thought that was really courageous on her part,” Silverstein added.

During her Oprah interview, Meghan claimed that she was hit with racism from within the royal family, claiming that an unnamed senior royal questioned how dark her then-unborn son Archie’s skin would be. Harry refused to name this family member, only saying that it was neither Queen Elizabeth nor Prince Philip. Meghan also claimed that she felt so isolated as a royal that she considered committing suicide at one point during her pregnancy.

The royal family responded two days later in a brief statement released by Buckingham Palace.

“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” the royal family said in a statement obtained by Fox News. “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

When asked about the interview by a reporter days afterwards, Harry’s older brother Prince William replied, “We are very much not a racist family. I haven’t spoken to [Harry] yet, but I will do.”
