Earlier this month, Ellen DeGeneres announced that she would be ending her eponymous talk show after its nineteenth season next year. Now, it’s been revealed that the talk show host and singer Kelly Clarkson will be replacing DeGeneres in her 3pm time slot on NBC stations by the fall of 2022.

The Wrap reported that “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” which is currently in its second season, has been closing in on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in the ratings over the past two years. Clarkson’s ratings have been on the rise thanks to her talent and infectious personality, while DeGeneres’ ratings have been plummeting in the wake of her toxic workplace scandal that broke last summer and has haunted her ever since.

“We look forward to Ellen DeGeneres’ 19th season paired with Kelly Clarkson for what is sure to be a blockbuster year. By 2022, ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’ will be the star of our daytime entertainment schedules and an asset to our early afternoon newscasts,” said Valari Staab, president of NBCUniversal Local.

Tracie Wilson, executive vice president of NBCUniversal Syndication Studios, released a statement about the move as well.

“‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’ is one of the most optimistic success stories in first-run syndication,” she said. “It is a treasured part of NBCUniversal Syndication Studios offering and we are proud to partner with the NBC Owned Television Stations group to continue the show’s success.”

“Kelly and our entire production team put their heart, intent and incredible passion into making a show that resonates with people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds,” Wilson added. “We’re working on some big plans for season 3 and are looking forward to becoming the premier show in daytime for years to come.”

The move will also potentially open the door for another newcomer in daytime, as someone will need to fill Clarkson’s old time slot.

This comes two weeks after DeGeneres announced that she would be ending her show at the end of the next season.

“When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged — and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore,” DeGeneres told The Hollywood Reporter.

DeGeneres has claimed the decision to end her show had nothing to do with her toxic workplace scandal, though some have found that hard to believe.
