Shaquille O’Neal has always had a heart as big as his stature. The NBA great has often been caught doing random acts of kindness, and he found himself in a philanthropic mood once again when he was in Zales jewelry store in Atlanta, GA earlier in the week.

A man walked in while O’Neal was in the store looking for some hoop earrings, and he was asking about the balance he owed on an engagement ring he had on layaway.

Shaq overheard the inquiry and decided to step in so the man could get on with asking his girl to marry him. Without thinking twice, he handed his credit card to the cashier and told him to charge the remaining amount to his account.

The young man was reluctant to take the generous offer, but the NBA legend quickly put his mind at ease by saying, “Don’t worry about it. I do it all the time. I’m just trying to make people smile. That’s all.”

“I didn’t mean for (the ring story) to get out, ‘cause I don’t do it for that,” he said on “NBA on TNT,” “I’m just trying to make people smile, that’s all.”

When TODAY’S Hoda Kotb shared about the story on WEDNESDAY’S MORNING BOOST, Craig Melvin confirmed that the story was a genuine example of O’Neal’s true character.

“I can attest to it. Shaquille O’Neal has done other large things like that for people — never talks about it,” the anchor said.

In 2019, O’Neal purchased an ADA accessible home for the family of a 12-year-old boy left paralyzed during a shooting in Atlanta, PEOPLE reported.

During the NBA on TNT segment, Shaq shared another story of how he found himself in a situation where he could be a blessing to someone else.

“The other day, me and my mom went furniture shopping, and this lady, she had an autistic daughter. She was also looking to pay for some furniture. I just took care of her. I’m into making people happy. Whenever I leave the house, I just try to do a good deed.”
