The world is in mourning today after Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth, passed away on Friday mourning at the age of 99. Now, the Queen has broken her silence through a palace spokesman in the wake of the death of her husband of 73 years.

“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” the Queen’s statement read, adding that Philip “passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”

People Magazine reported that the Queen, 94, has now entered an eight-day period of mourning for her husband. During that time, she will not be carrying out any royal duties, with affairs of the state also being put on pause. It is expected that once the eight days are over, a further period of official Royal Mourning will continue.

The United Kingdom is expected to go into a period of mourning that will last ten days, and the royal household will do so for thirty days. Over that period, guardsmen will be seen with black armbands on their tunics.

Philip’s funeral will be happening at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, but due to COVID-19, it is likely that his funeral plans will be modified. Philip had requested that he be given a royal ceremonial funeral, not a full state funeral, which means that he will not lie in state if his wishes are carried out.

“In view of the prevailing circumstances arising from the COVID-19 pandemic … it is regretfully requested that members of the public do not attempt to attend or participate in any of the events that make up the funeral,” said the College of Arms, which oversees many ceremonial aspects of the royal family’s work, according to CNN.

Tributes have been pouring in for Philip from all over the world from current and former world leaders.

“It was with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of The Duke of Edinburgh today,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement. “A man of great purpose and conviction, who was motivated by a sense of duty to others, Prince Philip contributed so much to the social fabric of our country – and the world.”

“Prince Philip will be remembered as a decorated naval officer, a dedicated philanthropist, and a constant in the life of Queen Elizabeth II,” he added. “The thoughts of all Canadians are with her and the entire Royal Family as they mourn this significant loss.”
