Shetara Sims Of Kansas City, Missouri has not had an easy life. The single mother lost her oldest daughter, Karyia in 2012 when she was killed during an argument at age 19-years-old. During that time, Sims had a lot of interaction with various police personnel, all of whom treated her and her family with kindness and compassion.
“The detectives were really there for us,” Sims says. “They came to see my kids. They were fathers, therapists. They were everything.”
If losing a child wasn’t difficult and stressful enough, Sims also lost her job in 202o due to the coronavirus pandemic. Struggling to pay her monthly bills, Sims walked into the grocery store with 12-year-old daughter Rakiya Edmondson with $7 to her name.
As they walked out of the store, the pair spotted a dollar bill lying on the ground. Excited and thinking their luck was about to turn. So they decided to purchase a lottery ticket and surprisingly, ended up winning $100.
Instead of spending the cash on themselves, Rakiya had an idea. They recently heard about the shooting of police officer Tyler Moss. Moss was in the hospital in critical condition, and remembering how good the police officers were to their family when her sister died, Rakiya suggested they donate their winnings to officer Moss’s recovery.
“Her 12-year-old daughter was with her and said, ‘Mom, we should give that to the police officer who got shot,’” the Kansas City Police Department said in a Facebook post. “She agreed immediately. With her current financial hardships, we urged her to keep the money. She refused, saying the officer’s family needed it, and police needed to know they were supported.”
After sharing the touching gesture on their Facebook page, calls came pouring in from the community wanting to help out the mother and daughter duo. The police department returned the act of kindness by setting up a GoFundMe page for the woman, hooping to raise $10,000 to help her out until she could find another job.
As of today, the fun has more than surpassed their original goal, and now stands at $167,351. If that was good news enough, Officer Moss who was originally give a 1 percent chance of survival is now home and recovering. What a great ending that started with a random act of kindness.
