During the funeral of Prince Philip on Saturday, all eyes were on his grandsons Prince William and Prince Harry, whose relationship has soured over the past year, especially after the latter’s explosive tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey last month. Now, it’s being reported that William’s wife Kate Middleton stepped up yesterday as the “family peacemaker” to try and help the brothers heal their rift.

The New York Post reported that it was Kate who was the first person to engage the isolated Harry in conversation after his grandfather’s funeral ended. She made a point of starting a conversation with Harry as they left the chapel following the funeral, and he appeared to visibly relax as soon as she started speaking to him.

They were soon joined by William, at which time Kate discreetly dropped behind them so that the brothers could talk to each other alone. the brothers then appeared to chat amiably as they ditched the cars that had been provided for them and chose to instead walk back to Windsor Castle together.

This all came as a huge relief to royal aides, who had been “on eggshells” as they planned the funeral around the brothers’ strained relationship. William and Harry’s bond had gone completely off the rails after the interview with Oprah last month in which the younger brother and his wife Meghan Markle claimed that they had been victims of racism from within the royal family. William was left “reeling” by this, as well as by Harry’s claim that his older brother felt “trapped” in the royal family.

The royal family responded to the interview in a brief statement released by Buckingham Palace two days after it aired.

“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” the royal family said in a statement obtained by Fox News. “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

Meghan was not at the funeral because she is about six months pregnant with her and Harry’s second child, a baby girl that is due early this summer. Doctors had reportedly advised her that traveling was a bad idea when she is at this advanced stage of her pregnancy.
