On March 25, Jordan Pagel did a brave thing. The 8-year-old made a video of himself to share with his class of him talking about his favorite book. What made this a big deal is that Jordan has a stutter and is also on the autism spectrum, which both make public speaking a challenge for the young man.

In the video which was highlighted on TODAY, Jordan gives a shoutout to the author of the book, and explains why he loves it so much.

“Hey Brad Meltzer. I am reading your book called ‘A New Day,’ and I really like this book because inside the book it’s like really funny and I really like how everybody makes really funny faces,” he said.

Jordan’s mom, Bethany, tagged the book’s author Brad Metzler in the post saying “Jordan has a special message for you! *Please be patient, he has a stutter*.”

The Pagel’s were surprised when Metzler sent a video response back to Jordan, and was even wearing a matching NASA shirt with the one Jordan was wearing in his initial video.

If a personal video from his favorite author wasn’t enough, the Pagel’s were even more surprised when their story was picked up by NBC, who invited them to come on the network for an interview.

During their video interview with Jose Diaz-Balart of NBC Nightly News, the Pagel’s were shocked when the host informed them that Brad Metzler was standing by to join them live and say hi to Jordan.

Jordan’s genuine excitement was evident as his face lit up when he saw Metzler, exclaiming “Hi Brad Metzler!,” to which the author responded with “Hi Jordan amazing man!.”

The two shared a sweet exchange which ended with one final surprise from Metzler. The author held up a sketch of Jordan created by illustrator Christopher Eliopolous, who Metzler works with for his children’s books.

Jordan’s mouth hung open in shock when he saw the special gift made just for him, a touching moment which will bring tears to the eyes of anyone who watches the interview.

Metzler praised Jordan for being the “hero of his class,” and said he’s especially happy that his story has been an inspiration to so many.

“People are amazing,” the author said. “We are fearful and brave and cowards and incredible and you see someone like Jordan and kindness will always win.”
