Weeks after Tiger Woods was in a serious car crash that left him requiring surgery and hospitalization, the golfing legend is still feeling “lucky to be alive,” according to a source close to him.
“He’s very grateful the rescuers got there when they did,” the insider added to US Weekly. “All of his friends and family members have been so supportive, he really couldn’t ask for more in that regard.”
On the morning of February 23, Woods’ was driving in at the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes in California when his vehicle hit a median and crossed over into oncoming traffic, rolling over several times. Though Woods had to be removed from the car with an ax and other tools, officers said at the time that he “seemed as though he was lucid and calm.”
After the crash, Woods’ manager Mark Steinberg said that the golfer had “multiple leg injuries,” and his team later revealed that he was moved to a different hospital after surgery.
“Tiger has moved to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and received follow-up procedures on his injuries this morning. The procedures were successful, and he is now recovering and in good spirits,” his team said in a statement. “Tiger and his family want to thank you all for the wonderful support and messages they have received over the past few days. We will not have any further updates at this time.”
Woods is still healing from his injuries, and it is believed that he will not be charged for the crash.
“This is purely an accident,” Los Angeles County sheriff Alex Villanueva said, adding that Woods was not under the influence of any substances at the time of the crash.
Another source close to Woods said that he has a “long recovery ahead.”
“When he is healed enough, he will need other treatments, including physical therapy. But he is a fighter. If anyone can recover from this, it is him,” the source told People Magazine of Woods.
“He wore a seatbelt thankfully. Otherwise, he might not have made it,” the source added. “I’ve seen collisions that didn’t look as serious where the occupants were injured much more severely. I think that’s just a testament to the fact that he was wearing a seatbelt, airbags worked as intended.”
