Two days after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, Queen Elizabeth responded in a brief statement released through Buckingham Palace, and there is no denying that one line in it really stood out. Now, a source has come forward to claim that this line was meant to be an “underlying jab” from the 94 year-old Queen aimed at Meghan and Harry.

“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” the royal statement read, according to Fox News. “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning.  While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

A royal insider told People magazine that the line “some recollections may vary” was meant to be an “underlying jab” that is meant to indicate that some members of the royal family remember things differently than Harry and Meghan do.

“There was anger,” said a palace source. “There was genuinely mixed emotions and deep sorrow and shock there too.”

Some of the claims made in Meghan and Harry’s interview were shocking, to say the least.  Meghan claimed that she was hit with racism from within the royal family, claiming that an unnamed senior royal questioned how dark her then-unborn son Archie’s skin would be. Harry refused to name this family member, only saying that it was neither Queen Elizabeth nor Prince Philip. Meghan also claimed that she felt so isolated as a royal that she considered committing suicide at one point during her pregnancy.

When asked about the interview by a reporter last week, William replied, “We are very much not a racist family. I haven’t spoken to [Harry] yet, but I will do.”

While William and Harry have spoken since the interview, Oprah’s best friend Gayle King said their talks were “not productive.”

“It’s a sad state of affairs because William and Harry could have been so brilliant [as a team],” another source said this week. “To think of what they could have achieved together is almost heartbreaking.”
