Liza Scott, a 7-year-old from Alabama, had her world turned upside down on January 30, 2021 when she suffered a Grand Mal seizure. A plethora of tests by neurologists and neurosurgeons at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham revealed several brain malformations that would require immediate surgical attention to prevent Liza from suffering further seizures or strokes.

FOX NEWS reported that Liza’s mother, Elizabeth Scott, spends her days running ‘Savage’s Bakery,’ their family owned business. It truly is a family business in that everyone–including Liza–pitches in and helps out whenever necessary.

“Liza has always shown the initiative to step up and take part in helping with things around the house or at the bakery even when it’s not expected or asked,” Elizabeth Scott said.

And that’s exactly what the little girl did when she learned about the many expensive surgeries she had coming up. Insisting that she help earn the money required for her surgeries and travel to Boston Children’s Hospital, she set up her homemade lemonade stand at her mother’s bakery and got busy selling. Liza has been selling her lemonade for 25 cents a cup, with many people giving far beyond that once they learned what she was raising money for.

So far, her efforts have contributed anywhere from $15,000 to $20,000 to her overall surgery fund. Her mother has also set up an online fundraising page through Mighty Cause for family, friends, and the community to donate through.

“Liza has taken the lemons thrown her way and shown us all that adding a little zest to life is what making lemonade is all about,” her fundraiser reads.

Thankfully, supporters have been very generous, donating $322,400 so far according to the fundraising page. And it couldn’t have come at a better time, as Liza and her mother are headed to Boston on Monday for the first round of surgeries, and the bills are already pouring in, even after their insurance company’s contribution. Elizabeth Scott, who is a single mother to two precious girls, has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support by so many, especially complete strangers.

“This spunky, loving, fearless, bright, happy girl will undergo her first brain surgery at Boston Children’s the week of March 8, 2021.  We will spend several week from home during each surgery, away from her 3 year old brother, family and friends, embarking on a journey we never saw coming.  And though the journey ahead is not paved with assurances, we find peace and comfort in knowing it is paved with the promises of God — His protection, His grace, His mercy, His forgiveness, and  His love.”

As Elizabeth will spends weeks away from work to care for her daughter, and then devote the entire year to further surgeries and recovery, the support from her family, friends, and the community will be even more vital.

Elizabeth invites anyone who is interested to follow Liza’s journey through their Facebook page, which can be accessed here. To donate to Liza’s medical fund, visit the link posted above.
