Yesterday, we reported that the golfing legend Tiger Woods had been in a serious car accident. Now, an update has come in on his current condition after he was hospitalized.

Woods’ team said in a statement obtained by Entertainment Tonight that the athlete has undergone a long surgical procedure on his lower right leg and ankle.

“Mr. Woods suffered significant orthopedic injuries to his right lower extremity that were treated during emergency surgery by Orthopedic trauma specialists at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a level 1 trauma center,” said Anish Mahajan, MD, Chief Medical Officer & Interim CEO at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

“Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia. Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins,” Mahajan continued. “Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling.”

Woods’ team added that that he is awake and responsive, and that he is currently recovering in the hospital. They concluded by thanking the doctors and hospital staff at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Fire Department. “There are no further updates at this time and we continue to thank you for your well-wishes and privacy for him and his family,” Woods’ team said.

The accident took place early Tuesday morning on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes, and Woods was the only person in his car at the time. Hours after the accident, officials said that at this time there is “no evidence of impairment” when the incident took place, and that it is subject to investigation.

The officials added that the vehicle was totaled, and traveled several 100 feet from the center divider. They did not use the jaws of life to get Woods out of the car, as had previously been reported, but they did need to use an axe and a halligan bar to extricate him.

After being taken to UCLA hospital, Woods is conscious and in stable condition. We pray that he makes a full recovery.
