Earlier this week, we reported that the golfing legend Tiger Woods was in a serious car crash, and he has been hospitalized ever since. Now, a source close to Woods has come forward to say that the 45 year-old athlete will have some very serious decisions to make in the coming weeks as he recovers from this.

“He doesn’t want his career to end like this,” the insider told People Magazine. “So if there’s any way at all that he can continue playing golf, he will.”

The source went on to say that Woods is “frustrated” by this setback, adding that prior to the crash, he had undergone back surgery to remove a disc fragment pinching his nerve after experiencing discomfort following the December PNC Championship.

“He expected 2021 to be the year of his comeback,” the source said. “Obviously, that’s not going to happen now. And that’s disappointing to him.”

Despite the severity of the crash, the insider thinks Woods can bounce back.

“This is a massive setback and he knows that it’s a massive setback,” the source said, “but he’s overcome obstacles in the past and thinks he can do it again.”

This comes after Woods’ team said in a statement obtained by Entertainment Tonight that the athlete has undergone a long surgical procedure on his lower right leg and ankle.

“Mr. Woods suffered significant orthopedic injuries to his right lower extremity that were treated during emergency surgery by Orthopedic trauma specialists at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a level 1 trauma center,” said Anish Mahajan, MD, Chief Medical Officer & Interim CEO at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

“Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia. Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins,” Mahajan continued. “Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling.”

Woods’ team added that that he is awake and responsive, and that he is currently recovering in the hospital. They concluded by thanking the doctors and hospital staff at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Fire Department. “There are no further updates at this time and we continue to thank you for your well-wishes and privacy for him and his family,” Woods’ team said.
