Kim Kardashian has filed for divorce from her husband, rapper Kanye West, after seven years of marriage.

Court documents obtained by TMZ show that Kardashian, 40,  is asking for joint legal and physical custody of the couple’s four kids: North, 7, Saint, 5, Chicago, 3, and Psalm, 1. West, 43, has not objected at this time.

The documents were filed by Laura Wasser, who is Kardashian’s lawyer. While there is no date of separation, there is a prenuptial agreement in place that both Kardashian and West are expected to honor.

Rumors swirled last month that Kardashian and West had split, with TMZ reporting that they had lived separately for a few months and that their relationship was “in deep trouble for the last half of 2020,” with the pair reportedly in marriage counseling. Problems between the two were first reported last summer, when West announced that he was running for president.

In a tweet from around that time that has since been deleted, West claimed that he had been trying to divorce Kardashian ever since she attended a prison reform event with Meek Mill in 2018, according to Fox News.

Kardashian and West met in 2003, and though the rapper often said it was love at first sight, they were friends for a few years before their connection became romantic. Kardashian would later say that it was her brief marriage to NBA star Kris Humphries that led her to realize that she had feelings for West.

“I think I had to go through that to figure out what I wanted. After my breakup, I was feeling really low and down and he said, ‘Just come to Paris and see my fashion show.’ He jokes that he put on this whole fashion show just to get a date with me. So I went there and I stayed with him, and that’s where we started dating,” Kardashian recalled in 2017. “I swear from the moment I landed, I fell madly in love with him and I thought, ‘Oh, my God, why didn’t I do this sooner?’ Like, this is what real life is like — love and fun and real support.”

After Kardashian gave birth to their first child in 2013, she and West married the next year. West said at the time that their love had nothing to do with fame or fortune.

“She’s my joy and she brought my new joy into the world,” he gushed. “And there’s no paparazzi and there’s no blog comment, there’s nothing that is gonna take that joy from me.”
