“The Brady Bunch” aired its final episode nearly fifty years ago, but it is still beloved by millions of fans to this day. While fans know a ton of things about the iconic show, many of them would likely be shocked to learn that the late star Florence Henderson actually once went on a date with Barry Williams, who played her oldest son Greg Brady on the sitcom!

In his memoir “Growing Up Brady,” William shocked the world by revealing that he’d had a crush on Henderson during his time on the show, and that he eventually worked up the courage to ask her out, and this story quickly grew a life of its on as an urban legend of sorts. Before her death in 2016, Henderson decided to set the record straight by giving her side of the story when it came to this date.

“Barry asked me to go with him to hear a popular singer perform at the Coconut Grove, the famous but long-gone Los Angeles night club,” Henderson recalled in her book “Life Is Not a Stage.” “I didn’t give it all that much thought, since I would gladly have done the same for any of the older children if asked.”

Henderson saw herself as a mentor to Williams, and she wanted to encourage his passion for music.

“Admittedly, Barry was making his first steps into adulthood at 15,” she said. “But it was innocent enough, and I didn’t want to discourage him.”

Henderson went on to recall what happened when they got to the Coconut Grove.

“We went in and were shown to a lousy table,” Henderson remembered. “I whispered sweetly in Barry’s ear that the maître d’ was expecting a tip. Immediately upon payment, like magic, our host recognized the celebrities we were and showed us to an excellent table.”

Though Henderson admitted that Williams gave her a goodnight kiss, she maintained that their “date” was innocent.

“After the concert, Barry was very sweet,” Henderson wrote. “We fetched his brother and he gave me a goodnight kiss at my hotel. So from his book, our playful but coy interviews… that followed, an urban legend was born.”

She also made it clear that going into the date, she set her boundaries with Williams.

“What is very true is that Barry did have a serious crush on me, which I understood and helped him get past,” she explained. “Let us just say that if he had entertained a roll in the hay with me, I would never have done that.”

Henderson and Williams remained friends until she died at the age of 82 in 2016, and she had nothing but positive things to say about him in her book.

“Undeniably we had a very special connection – and it goes without saying that I always felt like a surrogate mother to him and the rest of the kids,” Henderson wrote. “On a deeper level, I represented something to him that he admired. He loved music and knew that I could sing – he also liked my work ethic, and adopted it then as he still does. … He has remained a dear friend.”
